“Louise McGuane used natural light, modern design and open space to transform her 18th-century stone cottage into a contemporary masterpiece.”

Which I talked about shooting here: The Safe House – at the end of July of last year.

So just want to say a big Congratulations to both Dominic and Louise here…

Gothic Cottage.

We don’t always have the variety of period homes here in Ireland that you might see elsewhere – but our recent shoot was of an exceptional cottage built circa 1830.

With its turrets and gothic windows…
Rachel and Philip Pitman's 1830 gothic style home near Holywood in County Down.
.. it’s like something from a fairy tale.

Inside, it was beautifully restored to suit modern day living…

.. by Rachel & Philip, as seen here in the kitchen dining area with their little Westie dog.

So it was a complete gut job…

.. massive renovation and kitchen extension – all of which had to comply with listed building regulations.

Great house and a great story too – which is why we reckon it should make for a very interesting feature.

From 60’s groovy…

.. to classic simplicity.

Just before the end of last year, I shot Marie’s recently renovated 60’s house for a Christmas magazine feature, in one of the national publications. So at the start of the year, we decided to shoot a few of the other rooms for smaller features on ‘How to create the look’ – to show readers what can be done.

The en-suite in her master bedroom was perfect for this – so we kicked off the New Year by shooting it.

I’ve got to say, I smiled when Marie first showed me around the house because I knew that groovy yellow bathroom suite…

.. with those tiles, would be the first things to go 🙂

Having said that, it was interesting to note that she didn’t actually need to change the layout…

.. making it therefore quite cost-effective – and I personally like the fact that it’s very simple and not too girly too…

However, if there’s one thing I’ve learned for shooting homes, is that everyone has their own taste & style – so beauty is very much ‘in the eye of the beholder’ – and that’s what makes our job so interesting.

Anyway, once again, I loved what Marie did here…

.. and think it will make for a very interesting feature – so all now that is left to do, is find a buyer to help kick off the New Year in style.

More to follow… but in the meantime, I’d just like to say, a very Happy New Year to everyone.
