Black Friday sale.

As we approach the end of another year, it was time to take advantage of the 50% off ‘Black Friday’ sale over the weekend smile.

So some new books have been printed…
A book called Irish Hotels by Ashley Morrison.
.. which even includes the work we did at Straffan House last week…
The dining room in Straffan House at The K Club near Straffan in County Kildare.
.. which I plan to write about later on this week – so watch this space, as that was a totally amazing shoot smile.

Anyway, Irish Hotels is a large format coffee table book containing a collection of hotel images created by me and my team over the past few years in Ireland – which I’m thinking should make for a very nice Christmas present, as well as hopefully help kick start the new year wink.

Hidden Charms.

Is the title of our latest published work in the June 2014 issue of 25 Beautiful Homes magazine…
Pages 72 to 75 in the June 2014 issue of 25 Beautiful Homes magazine featuring Fiona and Conor O'Kane's detached Victorian Gentleman’s residence in Belfast.
.. on pages 72 to 75 – featuring Fiona and Conor O’Kane’s detached Victorian Gentleman’s residence in Belfast.

“Fiona and Conor O’Kane saw past the dubious decor and overgrown ivy of a faded period gem and restored it’s sparkle.”

Which we shot last year just before heading down to shoot at Mount Juliet in county Kilkenny – and so I have just noticed that I’ve totally forgotten to write about this one – which I must now do over the weekend wink

Anyway, for now, you can now read all about Fiona and Conor here…

.. and see their hidden charms, in this top selling national magazine which is currently on the bookshelves.

No.1 in Europe…

.. and 4 in the top 15.

Yes the results are in from the latest Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards – and so we would would like to say a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to 4 of the hotels in the Top 20 Resorts in Europe:

Top 20
.. whom we have had the great pleasure to worked with over the past few years – providing images for them to use to show the world what they have to offer.

The Lodge at Doonbeg
Doonbeg-133398
.. who we last talked about shooting for here: Nothing between here and America & here in September of last year.

Dromoland Castle
Dromoland-163303
.. who we last talked about shooting for here: Capturing the atmosphere and also when they won the 2012 Fodor’s top 100 hotels in the world Royal pedigree award.

Ashford Castle
Ashford-144137
.. who we last talked about shooting for here: Welcome to Ashford Castle as well as back in July 2010 when we first meet.

.. and Mount Juliet
Juliet-173014
.. who we talked about shooting for in May of this year as well as back in November 2012.

Plus an even bigger CONGRATULATIONS to Ray and everyone at the Lodge at Doonbeg for not only being ranked number one here in Europe, but for also being ranked number 20 the Top 100 Hotels & Resorts in the World:
Top 100

“What appears to be an aristocrat’s stately nineteenth-century seaside manor was in fact built in 2006 by the developers of South Carolina’s Kiawah Island and designed entirely by Americans. But what is very real about Doonbeg (and all that really matters) is its stunning setting on a remote whitecapped bay in west County Clare, the perfection of its every detail, and staff who are easily among the most welcoming in Ireland. Accommodations are in one- to four-bedroom suites with high ceilings, gas fireplaces, kitchens, and sumptuous beds. The centerpiece of the resort is the Greg Norman–designed course mowed through the rolling marram grass dunes.”

Which as you can see from their most recent ad…
Number-one
.. they are extremely proud of too – and rightly so, as that is an absolutely astounding result.

So a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to each of you once again – a fantastic result indeed – and thank-you too for choose us at ampimage to capture you’re places – which we’d obviously like to think, (greatly) helped add to your success here smile

In & out

Well, the weather forecast indicated we would have a few hours of sunshine today; however, there wasn’t much sign of it the following morning.
So we continued where we left of the day before in the Spa, shooting one of the treatment rooms…
The Spa at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. which have these beautiful shuttered windows.

Then it was over to the swimming pool…
Pool set-up
.. to capture two different versions of the same setting.
One aimed at appealing to those who want a well deserved, relaxing break…

..and the other appealing to families…

.. whose children are invited to join the Little Rascals Kid’s Club, between 1-5pm each day.

Next up, it was into the gym where Stuart & Shane stood in, while we set-up & tested the lighting…

.. ahead of the girls turning up for the final image…

.. looking very relaxed – as if they are enjoying their stay here.

After a bit of lunch, with some sign of sunshine on the horizon, we headed over to the equestrian center – which is one of the most impressive equestrian centers in the country – where once again Stuart & Shane stood in while we set-up & tested the lighting…

Nice try guys, but I’m not sure if I’m convinced smile

Anyway, while the girls organized the horses…

.. the sun flickered in & out behind the clouds, creating a lovely shaft of light within this American style barn.
So with my fingers crossed and all the horses in place, we started shooting for real – and after many sleepless nights worrying about this one – it all came together beautifully…

.. making this one of my personal favorite shots of this 4-day shoot.

We were now on a roll – and so with some more sunlight in sight, we headed outside to capture the jumping arena.

While the jumps were being set-up…

So we finished off the day with an exterior shot of this American style barn…

Day 5 brought us to the final three images of the Mount Juliet shoot. It was a great shoot – we were pretty tired at the end of it all but very pleased that we’d captured the essence of this beautiful hotel and golf resort.

We kicked off with the snooker room…
snooker room
.. this one was all about capturing mood and atmosphere…
The Billiard Room in the basement of Mount Juliet House at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. whilst creating enough light to show detail and depth.

Next up was the dining room where the emphasis was on simple elegance and fine cuisine.
With shots like this…

.. we always invite management and chefs to study the laptop…
behind the scenes
.. to ensure they are happy with everything – as we take pride in our work and we know they do in theirs too – so it’s important that the image is right…

.. which means the concentration levels were high 🙂

Anyway, after that, the final shot was inside one of their Rose Garden Lodges…
Living area in the Rose Garden Lodge at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. which are all slightly different – layouts and slightly different decor – so once again it was a case of us capturing that…
Lodge interior
.. relaxed ‘home from home’ ambiance.

After that, it was time to ‘pack and rack’…
the amp team
.. say our goodbyes and hit the road – tired but with a sense of satisfaction.

Back at base Marie and I both have been working flat out on projects – more to follow on all of that… plus magazine work – and again, an update to follow.

Cheers

Perks of the job

Day 4 of the Mount Juliet shoot entailed another very diverse mix of images !!

We kicked off with the restaurant/function room where our brief was to capture the striking ceiling plus windows. The big thing with this type of image is the placement of tables and chairs to suit the camera…
First picture taken in Kendals restaurant at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. so inevitably there’s a lot of pushing and shoving of furniture…
One of the first pictures taken in Kendals restaurant at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. but we slowly got there, as Marie worked on the table setting…
One of the first pictures taken in Kendals restaurant at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. while Stuart worked on the lighting.

Staff adding the finishing touch – conveying both ‘service’ and also to help demonstrate the scale/perspective of the room…

.. as well as add interest.

Next up was the exterior of the house…
One of the first pictures taken outside Mount Juliet House in County Kilkenny.
.. so once again it was a case of “quick…
quick
.. the sun’s out”…
Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. as this is Ireland after all smile

The hall/lobby has some striking murals and a beautiful fireplace…
One of the first pictures taken of the foyer and staircase in Mount Juliet House at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. so part of our brief was to capture that – which when lit…

.. did look impressive.

Plus the local fishing is first-class here…
quick
.. hence our cheerful angler chatting to a member of staff to complete the story.

It’s always a pleasure to do food shots…

.. especially when the subject matter is so skilled and inventive as this…

.. and so when the chefs invited us to sample their work after the shoot, well…
food
.. it would have been rude not to smile

Relaxed Club House Style

During day 3 of the Mount Juliet shoot, we worked solely in the Clubhouse area.
Once again our brief was to convey a sense of warmth and atmosphere within the informal and relaxed context of the Clubhouse.

First up was a twin bedroom…
First picture taken in the Twin bed in the Clubhouse at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. often booked by golfers – hence the accessories…
Twin bed in the Clubhouse at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. because as Marie says: not only do props need to tell a story, but they also need to be color coordinated – spot the pops of red !!

Next up was the main bar…
First picture taken in the President’s Bar in the Clubhouse at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. which I knew would be a tough one to light and include people in, especially with that dark wood ceiling – so it was all lights in for this one…
The President’s Bar in the Clubhouse at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. while Marie organized a perfect latte, a couple enjoying a drink and a guy having a pint – all very typical of the clientele!

For the conservatory restaurant, it was all hands to the pumps when the overcast skies lifted for a brief spell – quite literally ‘a window of opportunity’. Simplicity was the key to this shot…
The conservatory restaurant in the Clubhouse at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. symmetry and drawing the eye through this very pleasant area.

The member’s bar has quite similar decor & ambiance to the main bar…
The Spike bar in the Clubhouse at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. but with more than a suggestion of the “19th hole”.

Last up was the golf shop – it’s a large well-stocked shop so our goal was to show just that – but as the light was fading fast…
First picture taken in the Golf shop at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. we had to work quickly here, so while Stuart & I worked on the lighting…

.. Marie once again used red to drawing the eye through.

Day 4 to follow.

Diverse mixture of images.

Day 2 of the Mount Juliet shoot was quite a diverse mixture of images as the first two were taken in the beautiful period House – whereas the second two images were in the luxury lodges.

However, the same principles applied to all of the images.

Our brief here…
Concept report for Mount Juliet Country Club by Ashley Morrison and Marie McMillen.
.. which we touch on in our concept report, was to show the warmth, comfort and personality of Mount Juliet.

And to achieve that – its all about capturing “lifestyle” – be it with the inclusion of guests, staff, accessories and so on. It’s that attention to detail that makes people say “I want to be there”.

So we started in the drawing room, which is a beautiful elegant room, but which obviously needed some rearranging for the camera…
First picture taken in the Lady Helen room in Mount Juliet House at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. to convey the warmth and atmosphere required – and so we ended up producing this image…
The Lady Helen Reading room in Mount Juliet House at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. using a perfectly turned out member of staff – who completes the sense of comfort and service.

Who doesn’t want to be sitting in front of a warm fire on a crisp Autumn day ??

Or enjoy the newspaper over a morning coffee…
The Morning room in Mount Juliet House at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. or receive a warm welcome and be driven to your lodge…

.. or simply relax in a Home from Home environment…

.. in your Rose Garden Lodge – just for you Smile.
