.. as I see they actually ran with this image…

Anyway, that makes it a nice bright & airy 4 this month – so would just like to say congratulations to both Michelle and Jonny here – and also a big thanks everyone else who was involved here too.

Always loved this bedroom…

Or Christmas comes early – depending which way you want to look at it – as we were shooting Amanda and Keith’s double fronted mid terrace house in Belfast last week…
Amanda and Keith Cunningham's double fronted mid terrace house in Belfast at Christmas.
.. for a magazine feature in future Christmas issues.

So with the tree still up, I set-up the camera while Amanda made some last minute changes…
Setting up in Amanda Cunningham's home.
.. before lots more changes were made, while I worked on the lighting…
Setting up in Amanda Cunningham's home.
.. to give it a much more bright & airy feel, even thought it was raining outside.

Still, with everything and everyone in place…
Amanda Cunningham with her two boys in the living room of their double fronted mid terrace house in Belfast at Christmas.
.. the first set of images were in the bag, one hour after we had arrived – which for us, is actually pretty good going wink

Lots of detail shots naturally – and then into the kitchen…
Setting up in Amanda Cunningham's home.
.. where the fun began again – as Marie & Amanda did their thing…
Setting up in Amanda Cunningham's home.
.. while I once again worked on the lighting – which didn’t actually take that long, as the outside light was already pretty much in place – so with just a touch of fill…
The kitchen in Amanda & Keith Cunningham's double fronted mid terrace house in Belfast at Christmas.
.. we had our second main room done, before stopping for a bit to eat.

Anyway, a great home for sure and there was naturally lots to shoot – but the room Amanda was most keen to have shot, was this one…
Setting up in Amanda Cunningham's home.
.. which she had just recently decorated – and so with little to do here but light it up…
Bedroom in Amanda & Keith Cunningham's double fronted mid terrace house in Belfast at Christmas.
.. we actually managed to get it all done in a relatively short space of time.

So one to look out for next Christmas.

From Marie & me @ ampimage.com – wishing you all, a belated Merry Christmas smile

“Amanda and Keith McGuile’s home is beautiful all year round, but it takes on a magical air over the festive period.”

Which we talked about shooting at the time here: Shabby Chic Christmas.

Anyway, when Marie received her copy of the magazine last week, she emailed me to say:

My advance copy has arrived – they kind of bleached out Amanda’s a wee bit and I LOVE it 🙂

I love it too – looks amazing – so I’d just like to say a big thanks to everyone involved and especially to Amanda & Keith for once again inviting us into their beautiful home – not forgetting their son Bailey here…

.. who as always, was the real Star of the show.

So thank you from Marie, Mandy & me @ ampimage.com – as it’s definitely now the season to be cheerful smile

.. on pages 93 to 96 – featuring Fiona and Brian Shiells’ architectural new build near Dungannon in County Tyrone.

“Nestled in the heart of the Ulster countryside, Jane and Brian Shiells’ ideal home was 10 years in the making – it was well worth the wait.”

Which we talked about shooting at the time here: Little to do here.

Anyway, when Marie received her copy a few days ago, she emailed me to say:

Not a huge spread but quite dramatic – think you’ll be pleased 🙂

After the waiting game to get this result, I’m very pleased – so I’d just like to say a big thanks to everyone involved and especially to Brian & his wife here…
Fiona and Brian Shiells in the sitting room of their architectural new build house near Dungannon in County Tyrone.
.. for once again inviting us into their amazing home – which is definitely very different to their last home I shot back 2001 – which as you can see here from this image of their hand-painted staircase…
The hand painted staircase in Fiona and Brian Shiells' villa near Dungannon in County Tyrone.
.. which I always loved, was equally amazing and very dramatic too.

So thank you from Marie, Mandy & me @ ampimage.com – as this was definitely worth the wait.

Back in action.

Well, it’s been a while – mainly due to me not being well, which is another story – but anyway, we were back in action this week…
Setting up the shot in Donna Wilson's guest room above her garage near Greenisland in County Antrim.
.. shooting a room which Donna, a good friend of Marie & Stuart, had been working on above her garage.

So it was just like old times – ‘Deep in thought’ as Stuart said here when he sent this image through…
Deep in thought.
.. of the girls studying the image on the laptop screen, while I’m trying to figure out how to work the camera by the looks of things wink

Anyway, both Stuart & Marie worked their magic….
Setting up the shot in Donna Wilson's guest room above her garage near Greenisland in County Antrim.
.. and so before long the first image of Donna, sitting so as not to disturb the cushions…
Donna Wilson in the guest room above her garage near Greenisland in County Antrim.
.. was in the bag.

Then it was detailed shots…
Setting up the shot in Donna Wilson's guest room above her garage near Greenisland in County Antrim.
.. which Stuart once again titled ‘Many hands’…
Setting up the shot in Donna Wilson's guest room above her garage near Greenisland in County Antrim.
.. which they did indeed make light work here…
Chair in Donna Wilson's guest room above her garage near Greenisland in County Antrim.
.. and so before long we were almost done.

Still, there was the return angle to shoot – so Marie took a quick picture with her iPad here…
Marie's image.
.. to show us all that she felt should be the shot.

So while I set-up the camera to see what it would look like…
Setting up the shot in Donna Wilson's guest room above her garage near Greenisland in County Antrim.
.. Marie explained her vision of how she saw it:

“Bathroom door closed – grey sofas just cutting in each side – cushions on white day bed framing the shot 🙂
Graphic/Classy.”

Right – so how about this…
Side table in Donna Wilson's guest room above her garage near Greenisland in County Antrim.
.. was my thinking – which by the look on Marie’s face here…
Setting up the shot in Donna Wilson's guest room above her garage near Greenisland in County Antrim.
.. wasn’t quite what she was thinking wink

Anyway, it was good to be back – and finish with my personal favorite image…
Donna Wilson's guest room above her garage near Greenisland in County Antrim.
.. which I’m hoping the editors will like too.

So this is just a wee note from me to say thank you to all of you guys – and especially to Donna for inviting us in – an amazing job, so thank you.

A real life fairy tale.

A 15th century Manoir or Tower house near the medieval hill village of Cordes-sur-Ciel in the French Tarn region…
John and Angela Goodwin's Tower house in the Tarn region of France.
.. which belonged to Angela & John Goodwin, was our home for a few days while we shoot in this area – and what a magnificent place it was too…
John & Angela Goodwin's 15th century Manoir or Tower house near the medieval hill village of Cordes sur ciel in the French Tarn region.
.. like something you’d normally only expect to see in a fairy tale book smile

THE STORY:

The couple went out to find and refurbish a wreck but ended up with a readymade home which one friend said was like something out of a fairytale. By immersing themselves in the French way of life they are now fully fledged Francophiles enjoying a home which is the epitome of rustic manor house living.

First impressions?
“Ironically, this isn’t the type of property we’d usually go for. Our previous two homes in France had been ‘projects’ and indeed so had our last home in Devon before we moved here permanently 16 years ago. We’ve always really enjoyed the challenge of doing up a property and putting our own stamp on it – but when we viewed the tower house all the major work had already been carried out. We just couldn’t resist the wow factor we know France well – we’d holidayed here for 20 years before John took the chance of early retirement and we moved out here – and we knew this particular area in the Tarn region very well as a previous property of ours had been on the south-west coastline. But once we discovered and fell in love with the quaint little medieval hill town of Cordes-sur-Ciel, we knew this was where our next move would take us.”

Their favorite room – and mine too – was the living room…
The living room in Angela & John Goodwin's 15th century Manoir or Tower house near the medieval hill village of Cordes sur ciel in the French Tarn region.
.. with its double height, overlooked by a gallery – and centers around this huge fireplace…
The fireplace in the living room in Angela and John Goodwin's Tower house in the Tarn region of France.
.. which they light in winter because it does actually get quite cold here it seems.

Talking about lighting, that was a challenge for sure, as capturing the atmosphere of this wonderful old place…
Four poster bed in the master bedroom of Angela & John Goodwin's Tower house in the Tarn region of France.
.. was for me, what it was all about.

This wonderfully romantic four poster bed is the centerpiece of the master bedroom, which was bought locally and the rest of the room is furnished with a range of antiques sourced in nearby Albi.

Marie, on the other hand, was more concerned about how the table setting looked…
Marie setting the table in the conservatory of Angela & John Goodwin's Tower house in the Tarn region of France.
.. before Angela stood in…
Angela Goodwin in the conservatory of her 15th century Manoir or Tower house near the medieval hill village of Cordes sur ciel in the French Tarn region.
.. to showed her how it was done wink

Anyway, we stayed in what we referred to as ‘our wee cave’ – which was underneath and right beside the swimming pool…
John & Angela Goodwin's 15th century Manoir or Tower house near the medieval hill village of Cordes sur ciel in the French Tarn region.
.. which was just amazing – but this was the other option…
Guest bedroom in Angela & John Goodwin's 15th century Manoir or Tower house near the medieval hill village of Cordes sur ciel in the French Tarn region.
.. which was in the tower section – with its own spiral staircase which leads to a glass-floored mezzanine level above.

Stunning or what ?

And this is why I love shooting homes abroad so much, as you not only get to see things like this – which you just wouldn’t see back in the UK or Ireland – but you also get to meet the truly amazing people behind all it too.

And Angela & John where definitely two of those amazing people – who even went to the trouble to set-up this final shot…
Angela & John Goodwin setting up outside their 15th century Manoir or Tower house near the medieval hill village of Cordes sur ciel in the French Tarn region.
.. to complete our story of how they had made their dream come true…
Angela & John Goodwin outside their 15th century Manoir or Tower house near the medieval hill village of Cordes sur Ciel in the French Tarn region.
.. and what a dream that was too !!

Which just leaves me to say: Thank you from Marie & me to you both – as this one fairy tale we will never forget.

Featured in the October issue of BBC Good Homes magazine the following year…
Pages 118 to 123 of the October 2006 issue of BBC Good Homes magazine featuring Angela and John Goodwin's 15th century Manoir or Tower house near the medieval hill village of Cordes sur Ciel in the French Tarn region.
.. and in Templeton Robinson‘s Property Life magazine…
Pages 8 to 19 in the 13th issue of Property Life magazine featuring Angela and John Goodwin's Tower house in the Tarn region of France.
.. titled ‘Living the dream’ the year after that – plus in Northern Ireland Homes & Lifestyle magazine the year after that too…
Pages 46 to 54 in the June 2008 issue of Northern Ireland Homes & Lifestyle magazine featuring Angela and John Goodwin's Tower house in the Tarn region of France.
.. on pages 46 to 54.

All of which looked stunning and was lovely to see – as it is like seeing our fairy tale each year come true again as well smile

(Added Note: We are always on the lookout for such homes by the way – so should you happen to know of one and the homeowners are up for it, please do get in touch – as we’d sure love to feature their dream).

Anyway, that’s it from Marie & me in this real life fairy tale, set in the beautiful Tarn region of France – which we have returned to and plan to do again – but that’s another story for another time, which one day I’ll write about too wink

Cheers,
Ashley
