Between the showers.

Last month I talked about us shooting one of the new bedroom suites at the Dylan Hotel in Dublin here: Our story behind the story.

Well we were back recently to shoot a few more, which they had also talked to us about back then – and this was one of them…
“Original
.. which they call the Experience suite.

Our Thinking:
“We like the way we can see through to the bedroom in this angle.
The furniture at present is along one wall – so we will probably move the various pieces around to achieve a more attractive composition.”

So with the camera in basically the same position as before…
“One
.. the team when to work…
“One
.. both inside and outside…
“Behind
.. between the rain showers on this rather grey old day.

Which as you can see…
“One
.. started to look pretty good – just a few final touches…
“Behind
.. and it was time to talk to other model…
“Behind
.. do a test shot…
“One
.. have a think about that and what she should wear…
“Behind
.. then watch…
“Behind
.. Claudio sort out her hair…
“Behind
.. as he is a man of many talents – and this was the result…
“One
.. which I liked, but seemed to be the only one…
“Behind
.. as I was out numbered wink

So when for it again…
“Behind
.. this time with Barry standing in – and so this was the final image…
“The
.. that got the thumbs up – but I still liked this one…
“The
.. so I provided them with both, as well as without anyone in the image – because sometimes I know less is more wink

Then it was up to the top floor to shoot the Studio suite…
“Behind
.. which as you can see had this divide in the middle…
“One
.. which the normal system and lens I use, didn’t seem to be really capturing very well.

So Claudio finally got to see this other system being put to use…
“Behind
.. which he had been dying to see for quite sometime now…
“Behind
.. and so after pressing the button…
“Behind
.. he was finally able to see how much more the 24mm lens was able to capture…
“One
.. when I put the digital back on the Cambo system
“Behind
.. which I would very rarely use – and even when I do, I would usually crop the file like so…
“One
.. as I’m not a big fan of ultra wide angle.

Anyway, in this case I felt I did need to show more…
“Behind
.. and everyone agreed – so that just left a little bit of polishing to be done…
“Behind
.. and there you have it…
“One

“What do you think?”

“Behind
.. because I’m now putting words to these behind images…
“Behind
.. which Claudio is becoming very good at taking smile

Seriously though – I wasn’t looking forward to this one, as I knew from this recce image…
“Original
.. it was going to be a difficult one to capture – but was delighted with this final result…
“The
.. and so were they.

And so that was the bedrooms – which you can now see on their website…
“The

“The
.. alongside many of the other images that I’m pleased to say we produced too smile

Next up was a few exterior shots – which I will talk about another time, because as you can see…
“Behind
.. every picture tells a story.

Superior guest room.

One of the many bedrooms that Jack at the Kilmurry Lodge Hotel wanted to show their guests, was this one…
“Original
.. which they called their Superior rooms.

“Superior guest rooms are light and airy while also offering our guests that extra touch of luxury.”

So that was next on our list, after we finished the Nelligan’s Bar shot.

Which was pretty easy to shoot…
“One
.. after Ivan put up a new picture…
“Behind
.. Dianne had sorted out the bedding …
“Behind
.. Claudio had lit it…
“Behind
.. the polishing was done…
“Behind
.. and I had press the button on this strange looking camera…
“Behind
.. which I have been using now for nearly 15 years smile

Just point & shoot – and this was the final result…
“Superior
.. which can now be seen on their website:
“Screen

Take two being the same room with only a single double-bed…
“One
.. which again just needed a few changes made…
“Behind
.. which didn’t take the team very long to sort out…
“One
.. bar trying to figure-out what to put on that far wall…
“One
.. so Dianne held up a different few things…
“One
.. which I took a quick picture of…
“One
.. before we made the final call…
“One
.. and so this was the final result…
“Superior
.. which once again you can now see on their website:
“Screen

So it was as simple as that – thanks to Ivan and Claudio here…
“Behind
.. as well as Dianne…
“Behind
.. who was already getting things ready for the last two shots – so more on those and what Claudio was doing here…
“Behind
.. to follow wink

Only Bedrooms.

Which just happen to be the most important images of them all, especially for many hotels these days – as that is the image that their guests will be looking at, when they go to click on that ‘Book Now’ button on their website.

And since that one image may represent one of many similar type of rooms that are available, then multiple it’s value to them by the number of rooms, times the number of days in the year, times the number of years that they will want to use that image – and you will start to see why that image is a very important to them to get right.

So it may only be another image of a room to me, but to them, it’s may in fact be a lot more than that – and so that is what I try to keep in mind when talking to my clients beforehand, about what the fee would be for providing them with an image to meet their usage requirements.

Because taking a picture of a bedroom is easy – in fact, when we would first go to see them, I would often shoot most of their hotel in less than 30 minutes – and produce images like this…
Recce image of one of the bedrooms in Dunboyne Castle Hotel.
.. so if it was just some pictures that they needed taken, then there you go, job done Wink

Anyway, 30 years of experience – many of which I worked alongside some of the top advertising companies in the country – means that I know that it’s often more than just a picture of the room they need, it’s an image to help them tell a story or even sell a dream that they need, and it’s often an image that they will want to use not only in various media but also for years to come too, so needs to be just right.

Because there may be a lot of money riding on the back on this image or set of images as is often the case, so to undervalue how important these images are to them, could be a very costly mistake for everyone if they aren’t just right.

So the question is: what does one have to do to ensure that these images (which are in fact very important to them), are ‘good enough’ to meet their needs over the years to come ?

Anyway, below you can see what we recently did – which I will let the pictures speak for themselves – because as they say: “a picture is worth a 1000 words” – so enjoy the story they tell Wink

And as we posed afterwards for a group shot in the rain…

And their comments after seeing the final results:

“Ashley,
I think they are just fantastic. I am so pleased with them. Thank-you. “

Gráinne Ross, Managing Director.

“Hi Ashley,
Thank you so much, they look great! I’m really happy with them.
Thanks again. “

Which at the end of the day, is really what counts – as praise is bread to an artist smile..

Buying online is now the way a lot of people shop and even hotels will say that is the same for them too – so we were back at the Hodson Bay Hotel this week, to shoot their various bedrooms this time – so as to let their guests see what they will be getting for their money, should they choose one type of room rather than another.

So loaded the gear I thought we’d need to use onto one of their trollies…
Behind the scenes during the bedroom shoot at the Hodson Bay Hotel near Athlone in Ireland.
.. and while I set-up the camera…
Behind the scenes during the bedroom shoot at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. Marie & Sinéad discussed what they felt would be needed here…
One of the first pictures taken in the standard double bedroom at the rear of the Hodson Bay Hotel near Athlone.
.. to make this ‘Standard double’ bedroom at the rear of the hotel look even more appealing.

So while Sinéad kept a close eye on what was appearing on the screen…
Behind the scenes during the bedroom shoot at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. Claudio worked on the lighting – and Marie as usual worked her magic – which ended up looking like this…
Standard double bedroom at the rear of the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. after some minor tweaks.

Then it was across the hall to shoot this room…
One of the first pictures taken in the Lakeview double bedroom at the rear of the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. which they call the ‘Lakeview double’ – as one of the hotel’s unique selling points, is that it is stunningly situated on the shores of Lough Ree.

So while Claudio set-up the light outside…
Behind the scenes during the bedroom shoot at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. Marie and I worked away once again inside – while Sinéad kept a close eye on the images that were appearing on the screen…
Behind the scenes during the bedroom shoot at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. and the result was this…
Lakeview double bedroom at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. after we all had finished doing our different things.

Next was the ‘Lakeview twin’ bedroom…
One of the first pictures taken in the Lakeview twin bedroom at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. which was very similar – bar the fact that it was slightly larger and had two beds rather than just one.

So while I snapped away from the doorway…
Behind the scenes during the bedroom shoot at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. Sinéad here…
One of the first pictures taken in the Lakeview twin bedroom at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. and Marie too, made sure that what was in front of the camera looked tickety-boo.

Not sure why I looked so worried here…
Behind the scenes during the bedroom shoot at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. as the final result…
The Lakeview twin bedroom at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. looked great – although I do remember there was some debate over the flowers and lamp on the corner, so I shot it with & without…
The Lakeview twin bedroom at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. to be sure to be sure 🙂

The last of the rooms in the original section of the hotel was this…
One of the first pictures taken in the Family bedroom at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. which they called the ‘Family bedroom’.

What did we do before digital, I here you say – well lots of polaroids were used – but now of course, we all just look at the screen…
Behind the scenes during the bedroom shoot at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. as Marie looks at what she needs to do, while I look at what I need to do.

Anyway, being November means the light at 4pm was now fading fast…
Behind the scenes during the bedroom shoot at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. so I knew we had to keep moving here – but there was a problem…
One of the first pictures taken in the Family bedroom at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. as we could only see 2 beds, due to the middle double bed being about 6 inches higher than the two single beds on either side of it.

So yes Claudio, you will need to put a light outside that window…
One of the first pictures taken in the Family bedroom at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. which wasn’t so easy to do this time – as we were to high up for the lighting stands to be of any use, and there wasn’t a room above us neither – but we will come to that in a minute, as first we needed to change the beds around.

“Where there’s a will there’s a way”, as they say – so the beds were moved and then once again, thanks to the what can now be done with a digital system – Claudio stepped in to light the room…
One of the first pictures taken in the Family bedroom at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. using the boom arm out the window this time.

And the final result…
The Family bedroom at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. after spending a bit of time in front of the computer to bring it altogether.

Anyway, the following morning we were in the new wing of their hotel…
Behind the scenes during the bedroom shoot at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. where we had already shot a few of their bedrooms before – and it was were we shot the Bride on the balcony too, which I talked about shooting here: Selling the dream.

So this time it was just what they called the ‘Retreat Standard’ bedrooms that we needed to show – one at the rear…
One of the first pictures taken in the Retreat Standard bedroom at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. so more studying the screen…
Behind the scenes during the bedroom shoot at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. which resulted in this…
The Retreat Standard bedroom at the rear of the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. followed by a quick change…
One of the first pictures taken in the Retreat Standard bedroom at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. which results in this…
The Retreat Standard bedroom at the front of the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. to show what the same room would look like on the lake side – as that view of Lough Ree is pretty stunning.

With & without a view, as that is the thing that will make a big difference to what their customers will be willing pay them here for the use of a room – which is a bit like me saying: With & without my team – as that is the thing that will make a big difference here too, as to how much my clients will be willing to pay me for the use of my images wink

Anyway, that was it – time to pack the wagon…
Behind the scenes during the bedroom shoot at the Hodson Bay Hotel.
.. as we were all bedroomed out, in more ways than one smile

So just like to say a big thanks to everyone at the hotel who was involved here, and especially to Sinéad for putting up with us all once again – from Marie, Claudio & me @ ampimage.com near the Irish town of Athlone.

Cheers,
Ashley.

How hard can it be !

At the end of last year we were invited along to take a look at some of the bedrooms at the Kildare Hotel Spa & Golf Club (also known as The K Club), near Straffan in County Kildare, which they were wanting us to possibly shoot sometime.

So we were shown around by their Marketing people, and while Marie talked to them about what all they wanted, who their market was, etc, etc – I took some quick pictures like this…
Recce images of one of the bedrooms at The K Club located near Straffan in County Kildare.
.. just to see what the camera saw, as well as get an idea of what I may have to do later on.

Anyway, last week we were back – but this time we didn’t just come to take some pictures, we were here this time to create some images that they would want to use instead.
So needless to say the wagon was fully loaded, which naturally took some time pack as well as unpack that evening on arrival…
Unloading the Land Rover in front of the Kildare Hotel Spa & Golf Club.
.. but anyway, we kicked of the following morning in the Superior bedroom…

.. which by 10:47 we were ready to let Orla here…

Then it was over to the Barton Suite…

Still, very pleased with the result…

Anyway, next up was the Liffey Suite…

Next morning we started in Suite 6…

.. at this the final bedroom image…

.. tired but very happy – that we had actually made it look, as if we hadn’t done anything at all here, besides just take some quick pictures of what happened to be there, with a really good camera.

Because, like how hard can it be, to shoot a few bedrooms smile

Anyway, from Marie, Stuart & me – we hope we have made you want to stay at The K Club – as that was our goal here when we creating images – which is a truly amazing place in the beautiful County of Kildare, as you can clearly see.

A room for the night

Hotels usually have lots to offer their guests – and the g hotel in Galway here…
The exterior of The g Hotel in Galway.
.. with it’s fabulous Pink Salon…

.. luxurious bathrooms…

.. spa, pool, bars and stunning function rooms for any occasion…
The Event suite at the g Hotel in Galway.
.. is no different.

However, those were not the images that they wanted – or should I say: needed enough to want to pay me for the use of.

So what did they need ?

Well, as you may know, most people today book on-line, via the web – so what they needed us to provide them with, was a set of images to help them to get people to click on that Book Now button.
So the big question was: What are they (the hotel’s guests) actually buying here ?

Bedrooms – a room for the night – was what it basically boiled down to.

So that was what this hotel needed:- For us to produce & then provide them with a number of images of their different bedrooms, for them to use to let their guests see what they would actually be getting for their money, should they click on that Book Now button.

Simple.

In other words, pictures of bedrooms, like their Superior room…
Superior room.
.. styled and lit:

Or their bright & spacious Deluxe rooms – showing it as two single beds…

Their Luxury room…

Their magnificent Junior Suite…

The elegant and opulent Corner Suite…

.. which was by far the most difficult to light or control – due to the very strong sunlight…

.. which they say is ideal for either an intimate business meeting or special celebration.

And finally the Evangelista suite – which is pure, unadulterated luxury.
Located on the second floor – it has panoramic views of Lough Atalia, a spacious living room…

.. with an ‘open air’ private dining area…

Of the living room there is The Bedroom

.. the one she refused to get out of for anything less than £10,000 wink

Plus the en-suite facilities which included an oversized double shower and stand alone Villeroy & Boch bath…
The bathroom in the Evangelista suite at The g hotel in Galway.
.. which just blew me away – but boy was shooting a room full of mirrors a challenge or what wink

So that’s what they needed from us: To provide them with some images here, of just their bedrooms – so as they could then use those images to show to their guests – so as their guests could then see what they would be getting for their money, should they click on that Book Now button.

Which would be for: A room for the night – or more if they like – but not just any old room as you can see smile

From Marie & me @ ampimage.com … just for you.

October 19, 2013

A few days later…

.. and still no real joy in finding a new wagon – but I have at least narrowed it down to either an estate or another Land Rover… if I can find one in good shape.

The big estates, like the Volvo V70 or Audi A6, tick all the boxes – but there’s just something about the Land Rover that tugs at my heart strings.

Which in away, I guess, is a bit like this stuff we are currently shooting – people will buy it based more on what their heart says than what their head says.

And so with that in mine, our aim here was more to do with selling the Sizzle than just showing people the Steak.

As a result, Marie set-up another area in her house…
Capture-175535
.. where we produced a series of images like these…
Natural-175537

Natural-175557
.. as well as shooting some paintings from a new artist to the team – to be launched next week…
Natural-175629

.. and finally the first of a series of hand painted vintage furniture items…
Natural-175666
.. before deciding to call it a day.

Now back to more important things – the hunt for a new wagon – which is really all that I’ve been thinking about over the past few weeks, while poor Marie here has been busy focusing on the thing that is most important to her – which is the launch of Natural Calico.
Which I must say, she has done an amazing job on, so be sure to check out her website sometime – as well as her Blog.

myhotel Chelsea – day 2.

Filed under: Photography — Ashley Morrison @ 11:03 pm

After having the wheel clamp removed – due to the parking ticket machine seemingly rejecting one of my coins, which then meant only 12 hours rather than 24 hours – it was of to London. This time to shoot a number of areas at myhotel Chelsea – Sex in the City style.

First up was ‘East Meets West’ with this incredibly stylish suite, with a distinctive Thai theme…
Original picture taken of the thai suite in myhotel Chelsea.
Our concept report on this one read:

We feel that this says “suite” and could be a superb shot. We’d move the chairs to the left of the coffee table … perhaps terracotta scatter cushions to balance the colours in the room for the camera ?? Perhaps remove picture above bed ?? Possibly place the screen where the dressing table is – it might perhaps be more photogenic than the dressing area. Lifestyle on coffee table that is colour balanced – coffee table books, flowers in red/orange/cerise tones – not too tall. Candles.

To which they agreed.

So once again James was called upon to adjust curtains – poor guy…
Setting up the shot in the thai suite in myhotel Chelsea.
.. and never once did he complain !

Still the end result…
The Thai suite in myhotel Chelsea.
.. was once again an image which hopefully they will want to use for years to come.

Beside the lobby & the conservatory, one of the other rooms was this spacious bright queen bedroom suite…
Capture-005814
.. with the hotel’s strap-line being ‘Sex in the City’ meets ‘Brideshead Re-visited’ – which meant Marie had lots of fun sourcing some glamorous accessories, to help create the final result…

We only needed to produced 4 images at myhotel Chelsea, so we were finished early – which meant we had time to headed across town to myhotel Bloomsbury for one last shot before the sun when down.

They say the camera never lies; however, things may not always be as they seem – which was very much the case with this shot.

The aim here was to shoot a couple standing out on the roof top balcony overlooking Bedford Square, which is a superb asset for the hotel – and we all knew it would look particularly good with a sun set. However, as there wasn’t one, so we aimed to create the same effect – and it’s a good job James had a head for heights…

But with the light in place…

.. it was time for the others to kick-in, as Marie stopped panicking and announced “I think he’s going to pull it off” – which I think we pretty much did…

.. Steffen Jahn & Paul Freeman – with whom I’ve liaised with over the years on a number of photography forums. So it was a great way to end the day – by meeting up with these guys in person after all these years – and enjoy a few beers outside the hotel after having something to eat.

Next up: myhotel Bloomsbury in London – day 3.

Started working on the new range of bedroom and kitchens images this week…
Setting up the kitchen shot.
.. for O&S Doors – which was great – because the beautiful weather meant the natural light was wonderful…
Kitchen by O&S Doors.
.. and that really does help speed things up.

Which meant in a lot of cases, as you can see here…
Setting up one of the bedroom shots.
.. it was simply a matter of pointing & shooting, without me even having to set-up one light…
One of the bedrooms.
.. after Marie & Eamon had done their thing.

So great weather, great team work and a great location – all made for a great (wee easy) shoot 🙂

Cheers,
Ashley
