“WOW, I take my hat off to you Ashley! Just wonderful”

Was the lovely reply from Amanda, after I sent her the web link to let her see the final results, as we had been shooting her Victorian townhouse a few days before.

Amanda loves renovating old period properties – so this was actually the fourth renovation of her’s that we were shooting here, as we find the Editors of the various magazines that we would submit to, just love what she does.

So an easy one for Marie, as it was pretty much sitting up camera ready, which therefore gave her plenty of time to take some pictures of Stuart here…

Where we produced a load of images like this…

.. to zoom in on detail areas like this…

.. of the clocks on the wall.

Marie refer to Amanda’s style as being “shabby chic feminine decor” – so after a nice cup of tea with little finger in the air…

.. it was time to shoot the dog house…

.. which was like a work of art within a work of art smile

There was so much to shoot here – so we called it a day early and then came back the following morning, to shot the up-stair areas – which again Amanda worked very hard on…

Anyway, this was one of the many results…

So a big thanks to you Amanda, because “WOW, I take my hat off to you” – as this was just wonderful to shoot too smile

Straight forward.

Located in the Rosetta area of Belfast…
Lisa & Conor McCann's detached house located in the Rosetta area of Belfast.
.. was where we were shooting recently, in Lisa & Conor’s detached house.

Which was a straightforward one for Marie…

.. Claudio…
Claudio in the kitchen of Lisa & Conor McCann's detached house located in the Rosetta area of Belfast.
.. and even for Lisa herself…

.. as we all felt this house suited this ‘straight down the middle’ type of style.

So while Marie posed in her usual way…

.. Claudio sorted out the wires…

.. and after some rearranging for the furniture, plus a wee touch of sunlight…

.. it really was as simple as that.

The Storyline:

“Basically a major extension and renovation job !!!!
They specifically chose a popular suburb for good schools and links – and also, they welcomed the idea of a project.
They built a large extension to create a new kitchen and bathroom – and also a roof conversion.”

The bathroom was very impressive…

.. which once again was pretty straightforward to shoot, style & light – and the bedroom in the roof conversion was also pretty straightforward too…

.. so were in & out in record time on this one – and had a confirmed Yes please from the Editor at 25 Beautiful Homes magazine before lunchtime the following day – so a fantastic result all around Smile

Until the next time.

Kicked of the second day at the Ice House in one of their deluxe bedrooms…
Setting up a bedroom shot at the Ice House Hotel.
.. with little sign of any good weather in sight according to the met office.

There remains no let up in sight to the unsettled conditions with showers or periods of rain expected to continue over the rest of the week and into next week.

So it was a case of trying to create the feeling that the sun was shining in here – as their unique selling point of these rooms was very much to do with the amazing river view outside the windows – which meant Marie ended up not only having to style the room – using mainly items which FoxFord Woollen Mills had kindly offered to let us use – but also having taken this shot too…
Deluxe bedroom at the Ice House Hotel in Ballina.
.. while I acted as her assistant and held the lights in place.

As I’d often say to clients: I can light up a room, but I can’t light up the world – we are good, but not that good 🙂

So this was a case of having to think a wee bit outside the box here – and then making a call on what else was worth trying to shoot, as it was very dark and grey outside.

In other words, avoid windows if at all possible, was my thinking – and so we decided to shoot the bathroom in one of the Heritage bedroom suites…
Bathroom in one of the Heritage bedroom suites at the Ice House Hotel in Ballina.
.. which we both felt looked amazing and was a unique selling point of theirs for sure.

Before setting up to create the last image, which wasn’t for me looking worried…

.. but was their head chef Anthony Holland…

.. while he added some final touches to his creations.

And so with little sign of good weather insight, we decided to leave it at that – which was a bit of a shame really, as there was still so much more we could have shot if the weather had been better.

Anyway, until the next time, as they say – that was basically it for us.

So just like to say a big thanks to everyone involved – especially to Carmel from The Marketing Department, Ken form the Ice House Hotel and the folk at FoxFord for helping us out here.

Oh, and special thanks to the models too – as you were both great to work with.

We’re aff.

After various glitches, we finally launched our wee online shop – gulp 🙂
Natural Calico

Not the ideal climate for it, unfortunately – but we have our feet on the ground and are keeping our expectations realistic.

Style-wise – needless to say, I ended up in my ‘Modern Country’ comfort zone 🙂
While it’s not exactly High Street, it’s not too far away from it I guess.

I’m planning to put out two ‘chatty’ blogs each week and will be adding constantly to the Look Book and changing the homepage every few weeks too.

We literally only went “live” yesterday so we have a long way to go to get our name out there – but so far, the feedback has been amazing and orders are already coming in – quite exciting 🙂

Here is the link:

Take Care
Marie

Or as Del Boy would say: Don’t worry, Rodney Marie. This time next year, we’ll be millionaires! cool

Seriously though, exciting times for us all – as we try something new, using our joint experiences – which began back in February as a dream – but it’s now very much for real.

So we’re aff, as they would say in this part of the world, as www.naturalcalico.com is now live – so be sure to check it out sometime.

From 60’s groovy…

.. to classic simplicity.

Just before the end of last year, I shot Marie’s recently renovated 60’s house for a Christmas magazine feature, in one of the national publications. So at the start of the year, we decided to shoot a few of the other rooms for smaller features on ‘How to create the look’ – to show readers what can be done.

The en-suite in her master bedroom was perfect for this – so we kicked off the New Year by shooting it.

I’ve got to say, I smiled when Marie first showed me around the house because I knew that groovy yellow bathroom suite…
ensuite1024
.. with those tiles, would be the first things to go 🙂

Having said that, it was interesting to note that she didn’t actually need to change the layout…
Ensuite in Marie and Alan McMillen's renovated 1960's home near Belfast.
.. making it therefore quite cost-effective – and I personally like the fact that it’s very simple and not too girly too…
Ensuite in Marie & Alan McMillen's renovated 1960's home near Belfast.

However, if there’s one thing I’ve learned for shooting homes, is that everyone has their own taste & style – so beauty is very much ‘in the eye of the beholder’ – and that’s what makes our job so interesting.

Anyway, once again, I loved what Marie did here…
Ensuite in Marie & Alan McMillen's renovated 1960's home near Belfast.
.. and think it will make for a very interesting feature – so all now that is left to do, is find a buyer to help kick off the New Year in style.

More to follow… but in the meantime, I’d just like to say, a very Happy New Year to everyone.

Capturing the atmosphere.

There are some stunning Castle hotels in Ireland and we have been delighted to shoot several of them over the past few years.

Last week brought us back down to Dromoland Castle Hotel & Country Club – a luxurious, elegant 5 star hotel in County Clare – where they needed some new images produced for their marketing & advertising material – to show not only the new look of their adjoining Country Club bar…
The Club House bar and restaurant at Dromoland Castle in County Clare.
.. and restaurant…

.. but also their newly decorated bedroom suites as well.

Anyway, all went according to plan at first; however, the little snug/library area in the clubhouse proved a waiting game for us – as we felt it was important to capture a cozy relaxed ambiance…
First image taken at the Library at the Clubhouse in Dromoland Castle
..but of all times, the weather was sunny. And so we just had to sit it out, while Carl poked the fire a few times, as he acted the part of the would-be model…

.. until the sky darkened.

But hopefully, it was well worth the wait…

.. as who wouldn’t want to relax in front of that roaring fire – especially at this time of year, here in Ireland!

The following day – as well as shooting many of their luxury bedroom suites…
Bedroom suite at Dromoland Castle in County Clare.
.. which as you can see here…
Bedroom suite at Dromoland Castle in County Clare.
.. are simply stunning – we also shot their new Presidential suite…

.. which had a suitably luxurious new bathroom fitted.

So once again, it was all about team work…
Setting up in the bathroom at Dromoland Castle
.. and getting the right sort of ambience – lighting, candles, roses, champagne, etc, etc – all of which played their role, to achieve that all important result, where potential guests look at the final image…

.. and say: I want to be there smile.

So a big ‘Thank you’ to Mark, the Manager, and all his highly professional team for looking after us so well – it truly was a wonderful shoot – and we hope we managed to capture not only the decor but also the atmosphere, for all the world to see what an amazing place Dromoland Castle is famous for.
