We have worked in the incredibly stylish Dromoland Castle a few times in recent years. It is a fabulous 5 star hotel in County Clare where the Manager, Mark is the ultimate professional; totally hands on and has always been a pleasure to work with.

So we were delighted when he told us this morning that they have just been named as one of the 2012 Fodor’s top 100 hotels in the world. We are thrilled for Mark and his team – and very pleased too that it was one of our images…
Top 100 hotels
.. that Fodor chose to represent Dromoland Castle.

This was a surprisingly tricky shot – and one where we had to wait several hours for the light to fade – which we talked about here: Capturing the atmosphere – but it was clearly worth the wait đŸ™‚

Hotels with a noble lineage were all the rage this year, perhaps due to the world’s obsession with Will and Kate and the runaway success of Downtown Abbey. Monarchs, aristocrats, and cardinals have slept in our 13 Royal Pedigree hotels from England to Peru. These labyrinthine castle, grand country estates, and colonial palaces will cosset you like a globetrotting royal, too.

So a huge Congratulations to Mark and the entire team in Dromoland Castle for this prestigious recognition.

We shoot homes for magazines right across the board – all types, styles and sizes – and one of the things we enjoy is the sheer variety !!

It’s always nice to shoot one with a bit of history and with unusual features and the home we recently shot was a great example of an interesting and original home.

A local Architect converted an old Cornmill in a beautiful setting…
John Baird's converted Cornmill near Comber in County Down.
.. and it has all the design elements you’d expect of an Architect’s home…
Cornmill
.. but this one also has a real sense of comfort, colour and personality too…
The living room in John Baird's converted Cornmill near Comber in County Down.
.. fabulous art work, antiques mixed with modern…

.. and even some unexpected Trompe L’oeil.

So all that was really left for us to do…
Cornmill
.. was to ensure everything was ‘just right’ for the camera…
Setting up the bedroom in John Baird's converted Cornmill near Comber.
.. and then add some light…

.. to make it sparkle.

Anyway, just like to say many thanks to John for making is so welcome here…

Day 5 brought us to the final three images of the Mount Juliet shoot. It was a great shoot – we were pretty tired at the end of it all but very pleased that we’d captured the essence of this beautiful hotel and golf resort.

We kicked off with the snooker room…
snooker room
.. this one was all about capturing mood and atmosphere…
The Billiard Room in the basement of Mount Juliet House at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. whilst creating enough light to show detail and depth.

Next up was the dining room where the emphasis was on simple elegance and fine cuisine.
With shots like this…

.. we always invite management and chefs to study the laptop…
behind the scenes
.. to ensure they are happy with everything – as we take pride in our work and we know they do in theirs too – so it’s important that the image is right…
dining room
.. which means the concentration levels were high đŸ™‚

Anyway, after that the final shot was inside one of their Rose Garden Lodges…
Living area in the Rose Garden Lodge at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. which are all slightly different – layouts and slightly different decor – so once again it was a case of us capturing that…
Lodge interior
.. relaxed ‘home from home’ ambience.

After that it was time to ‘pack and rack’…
the amp team
.. say our good byes and hit the road – tired but with a sense of satisfaction.

Back at base Marie and I both have been working flat out on projects – more to follow on all of that… plus magazine work – and again, an update to follow.

Cheers

Perks of the job

Day 4 of the Mount Juliet shoot entailed another very diverse mix of images !!

We kicked off with the restaurant/function room where our brief was to capture the striking ceiling plus windows. The big thing with this type of image is the placement of tables and chairs to suit the camera…
First picture taken in Kendals restaurant at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. so inevitably there’s a lot of pushing and shoving of furniture…
One of the first pictures taken in Kendals restaurant at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. but we slowly got there, as Marie worked on the table setting…

.. while Stuart worked on the lighting.

Staff adding the finishing touch – conveying both ‘service’ and also to help demonstrate the scale/perspective of the room…

.. as well as add interest.

Next up was the exterior of the house…
One of the first pictures taken outside Mount Juliet House in County Kilkenny.
.. so once again it was a case of “quick…
quick
.. the sun’s out”…
Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. as this is Ireland after all smile

The hall/lobby has some striking murals and a beautiful fireplace…
One of the first pictures taken of the foyer and staircase in Mount Juliet House at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. so part of our brief was to capture that – which when lit…

.. did look impressive.

Plus the local fishing is first class here…
quick
.. hence our cheerful angler chatting to a member of staff to complete the story.

It’s always a pleasure to do food shots…

.. especially when the subject matter is so skilled and inventive as this…

.. and so when the chefs invited us to sample their work after the shoot, well…

Relaxed Club House Style

During day 3 of the Mount Juliet shoot we worked solely in the Clubhouse area.
Once again our brief was to convey a sense of warmth and atmosphere within the informal and relaxed context of the Clubhouse.

First up was a twin bedroom…
First picture taken in the Twin bed in the Clubhouse at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. often booked by golfers – hence the accessories…

.. because as Marie says: not only do props need to tell a story, but they also need to be colour coordinated – spot the pops of red !!

Next up was the main bar…
First picture taken in the President’s Bar in the Clubhouse at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. which I knew would be tough one to light and include people in, especially with that dark wood ceiling – so it was all lights in for this one…
The President’s Bar in the Clubhouse at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. while Marie organised a perfect latte, a couple enjoying a drink and a guy having a pint – all very typical of the clientele !

For the conservatory restaurant, it was all hands to the pumps when the overcast skies lifted for a brief spell – quite literally ‘a window of opportunity’. Simplicity was the key with this shot…
The conservatory restaurant in the Clubhouse at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. symmetry and drawing the eye through this very pleasant area.

The member’s bar has quite similar decor & ambience to the main bar…
The Spike bar in the Clubhouse at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. but with more than a suggestion of the “19th hole”.

Last up was the golf shop – it’s a large well stocked shop so our goal was to show just that – but as the light was fading fast…
First picture taken in the Golf shop at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. we had to work quickly here, so while Stuart & I worked on the lighting…

.. Marie once again used red to drawing the eye through.

Diverse mixture of images.

Day 2 of the Mount Juliet shoot was quite a diverse mixture of images as the first two were taken in the beautiful period House – whereas the second two images were in the luxury lodges.

However the same principles applied to all of the images.

Our brief here…
Concept report for Mount Juliet Country Club by Ashley Morrison and Marie McMillen.
.. which we touch on in our concept report, was to show the warmth, comfort and personality of Mount Juliet.

And to achieve that – its all about capturing “lifestyle” – be it with the inclusion of guests, staff, accessories and so on. It’s that attention to detail that makes people say “I want to be there”.

So we started in the drawing room, which is a beautiful elegant room, but which obviously needed some rearranging for the camera…
First picture taken in the Lady Helen room in Mount Juliet House at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. to convey the warmth and atmosphere required – and so we ended up producing this image…
The Lady Helen Reading room in Mount Juliet House at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. using a perfectly turned out member of staff – who completes the sense of comfort and service.

Who doesn’t want to be sitting in front of a warm fire on a crisp Autumn day ??

Or enjoy the newspaper over a morning coffee…

.. or receive a warm welcome and be driven to your lodge…

.. or simply relax in a Home from Home environment…

Day one at Mount Juliet.

Is where we were shooting a few weeks ago, at this beautiful Country Estate…
Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. in County Kilkenny.

So only getting around to updating my blog now, as I have been busy working on another project – but away, we kicked off day one shooting two of their bedroom suites in the Mount Juliet House – so there was the usual amount of pushing & shoving as Marie did her thing…
First picture taken in on of the bedroom suites at Mount Juliet Country Estate in County Kilkenny.
.. while Stuart set-up the lights…

.. to get it just right for the camera.

Which is what we do, turning this…

.. into an image that helps sell the dream.
Bedroom suite at Mount Juliet.

Anyway, after spending most of the day working on the various bedroom suits, it was then time for the bar…
The bar in Mount Juliet House.
.. where Stuart stood in as a guest – and enjoyed a well deserved pint of Guinness đŸ™‚

So that was day one – 5 images produced – which means we were on schedule, as 5 a day is my target figure on job like this.
